Large Victorian burr walnut tea caddy in fine condition. Though I would not go as far as stating that the style of this caddy can be termed as rare they certainly were made in far less numbers than the more conventional flat sided rectangular style. All four sides of the base section are convex with a standard round top lid. Highly attractive grain. Other than an extremely minor knock to the back bottom left corner all edges are keen and all veneer is original and complete. No shrinkage splits. The lid opens to reveal a fine looking interior. Original veneered lid interior in excellent condition, more attractive and far more practical than the material or paper lining seen on the vast majority of tea caddies made throughout the 18th & 19th centuries. Hinges and lock in fine condition. Key shown for decorative purposes only. The central bowl is in superb condition and has skilfully been turned from a solid piece of wood. It sits quite well within the original aperture and blends well in terms of colour. I am certain that a glass bowl be that of the period or a reproduction could be found without too much difficulty if preferred. The two lids are original, veneered to complement the caddy exterior, feature the original turned knobs and in common with the two tea storage areas have the remains of the original foil lining to the lid undersides. A fine example of the style, the shape ensuring that it would display beautifully be that within a collection to add contrast or as a standalone piece. Unpacked weight 1.8Kg
