Large Early 20th-Century Japanese Chinoiserie Lacquered Blanket Box on Stand Brief Description: This is a large, superb early 20th-century Japanese Chinoiserie lacquered blanket box or storage chest, raised upon a separate ebonised wooden stand. The substantial rectangular chest is decorated throughout in traditional black, deep red and gilt lacquer, with extensive hand-decorated figural scenes depicting figures within architectural and garden settings. The hinged lid is similarly decorated, while the front is centred by an impressive pierced and engraved metal lock plate, complemented by carrying handles to the sides. Opening to reveal a spacious, deep-red lacquered interior, the chest provides generous storage and would originally have been intended for textiles, blankets, clothing, or other household possessions. The box rests upon its separate black lacquered stand with shaped bracket feet, giving the piece an imposing and particularly attractive presence when displayed. Perhaps its greatest decorative appeal is the wonderfully aged surface. The lacquer has acquired extensive rubbing, losses, scratches and wear over many decades, revealing layers of red, black and gilt beneath.
