LARGE VICTORIAN BRASS SCHOOL HAND BELL WITH TURNED MAHOGANY HANDLE

A substantial late 19th-century Victorian brass hand bell, traditionally associated with school, institutional or public building use. The bell has a heavy cast brass body with a beautifully turned mahogany handle of elongated baluster form, finished with an acorn-shaped finial. It retains its internal clapper and produces a strong, clear ring. Dating from approximately c.1870–1900, this is an evocative piece of Victorian social history and would make an attractive decorative object for a library, study, office or collection. The brass has developed an appealing aged patina with surface marks and wear consistent with its age and use. The mahogany handle also shows expected age-related wear. Please note: the wooden handle has a little movement where it joins the brass bell and is slightly loose. This appears consistent with age, use and natural movement or shrinkage of the timber over time, although we have not attempted to tighten or alter it.
