Description
Large Victorian Wooden Centrepin Fishing Reel – Frogback / Starback Attributed to Millwards, England (c.1880–1910) An exceptional and highly desirable example of a large Victorian wooden centrepin fishing reel, crafted in the Redditch tradition and attributed to the renowned maker F. W. Millward & Sons. This is a superior-quality reel of impressive scale and construction, representing the golden age of British angling equipment. Measuring approximately 7 inches in diameter, the reel is of classic Nottingham pattern, constructed from richly patinated hardwood—most likely mahogany and fitted throughout with substantial brass components. The back features the distinctive frogback (starback) brass plate, a hallmark of early, high-grade reels, providing both structural integrity and visual impact. The reel is further enhanced by a full brass internal mechanism, confirming its quality and early manufacture. A large central brass wingnut tensioner allows for adjustment, while a rim-mounted brass line guide ensures controlled line flow—features associated with more refined and functional examples of the period. The twin turned wooden handles remain intact, offering smooth and balanced operation, and the reel is noted to run freely. Stamped “Made in England,” the piece firmly places itself within the historic Redditch manufacturing industry, the heart of British fishing tackle production in the late 19th century. While not bearing a maker’s name, the construction, scale, and detailing closely align with known examples produced by Millwards, and it is confidently attributed to that workshop or its immediate circle. The reel displays an excellent, untouched patina, with the wood and brass having aged gracefully over more than a century. .
