Description
Lars Gynning (1920–2003) – The Winner II - A Limited Edition Aubusson Tapestry by Pinton Frères, France, Circa 1960
A striking and highly decorative mid-20th-century French Aubusson tapestry, entitled The Winner II, designed by the Swedish artist Lars Gynning (1920–2003) and woven by the prestigious Pinton Frères workshops in Aubusson, France.
Depicting a dramatic horse race, the composition features a colourful group of jockeys and galloping horses, boldly rendered in a distinctive modernist style. The vibrant greens, oranges, blues and earthy tones contrast beautifully with the atmospheric grey sky, creating a wonderful sense of movement, energy and excitement.
Gynning was a Swedish painter and tapestry designer whose work became closely associated with the celebrated Aubusson weaving tradition. His designs combine Scandinavian modernism with the rich artistic heritage of French tapestry production.
Expertly woven by the renowned Pinton workshops, the tapestry demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship for which Aubusson became internationally celebrated during the 20th century.
The tapestry bears the woven signature GYNNING and the Pinton workshop monogram. Retaining its original manufacturer’s label to the reverse, inscribed with the title The Winner II, the artist’s signature and the edition number 1/6, denoting the first of a limited edition of six.
An impressive and increasingly collectable example of mid-century textile art, equally suited to a contemporary interior or a more traditional setting.

Lars Gynning (b. Sweden, 1920-2003) Lars Gynning is the Swedish artist who meant most as creator of patterns for woven wallpaper (tapestries) in France during the 20th century. After studies in both Sweden and France, cooperation with the famous company Pinton Frères in Aubusson began in the 1940s. About 250 tissues are made according to Gynning's publishers. One of France's largest textile stars Jean Lurçat is one of the artists who was involved with and early influenced Gynning, who has since completely created his own style.
