John Cary (1734-1835) was a very famous English cartographer, best known for "The New and Correct English Atlas" in 1787. Cary abandoned the elaborate decoration and mythical animals which adorned earlier maps in favour of a more detailed accurate and scientific approach. His work became the standard which other cartographers were to follow. This map is from the "New and Correct English Atlas", but is dated 1793, so must be from a revised edition. This piece is double framed so that the description of Gloucestershire, with its principal seats and beauty spots etc is shown under glass verso - see photos.
Art & Stuff has clarified that the Late 18th Century Map of Gloucestershire by John Cary (LA226232) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1793
