This beautifully engraved and printed aphorism was printed from the original woodblock by the Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge, England, on heavy Barcham Mills hand-made paper It is a limited edition print, number 20/75, and signed by Leo Wyatt in pencil. Leo Wyatt (1909-1981) was raised in an orphanage. He moved to Cape Town, South Africa in 1947 to improve his daughter Elizabeth's health. He moved back to England in 1961 so he could realize his potential as a professional engraver. Wyatt gained fame as a bookplate engraver both in England and the United States of America. Among many others, he created bookplates for the Boston Athenaeum. The largest portion of the Leo Wyatt archive is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In his late fifties, challenged by the assertion that famed English wood engraver Reynolds Stone was seemingly “the sole practitioner of the Chancery Cursive letter in engraved form today,” Wyatt began to engrave letterheads and bookplates in this classic letter form. He also created separate alphabets and engraved quotations, bringing samples with him on two trips to America in the 1970s, where he found a new popularity and market for his work.
