Description
Size: Photograph 26 x 36.5 cm. Mount 42 x 59 cm. Condition: Excellent condition on its original mount. Some small tears/loss to top of mount. The photograph is tipped onto black card which is in turn tipped onto the mount. This fine photograph portrait is by the South African photographer Leon Levson and signed by him in his usual style in pencil on the mount. The photograph is a chlorobromide print. The subject is the violinist David de Groot (usually known as "De Groot") towards the end of his career. It is signed and inscribed "To D M Fraser Esq. with all my sincere good wishes in remembrance of a very pleasant lunch, Aug 4 1930, Empire Theatre Edinburgh." It seems that De Groot had this portrait produced when he visited South Africa in 1929-1930, and then brought it back to England. Leon Levson (1883-1968) was a Lithuanian born photographer who settled in South Africa in 1902. As well as establishing himself as a portrait photographer for the fashionable elite, before World War Two, Levson is known for the documentary studies he made in the late 1940's of the life of black workers, committed to the exposure of the 'repressive' conditions on the mines and of the poverty of migrant labour and apartheid system. David de Groot (1880-1933), a Dutch violin player from the town of Rotterdam who settled in London in 1907. In 1908 he joined the orchestra of the new Piccadilly Hotel in London, of which he became director between 1909 and 1928. Additionally he often directed larger orchestras, touring widely in Britain and visiting South Africa in 1929-30. Apart from his many arrangements he composed a number of original pieces in lighter style like Valse Passionnée and the very popular, lilting Piccadilly Grill Waltz. A portrait of David can be seen at the street Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam, as part of a permanent open air exposition of artists from Rotterdam who have contributed to the jazz legacy.
