Description
This is a 19th Century (George II style) antique mahogany fold-over card table by Gillows of Lancaster. The foldover top with outset rounded corners, opens to a brown baize lined playing surface. It sits above a single frieze drawer with original cast brass handle and a fretwork back plate, all raised on C scroll carved cabriole legs ending in raised pad feet. The drawer is stamped ‘GILLOWS, LANCASTER’.
Gillows were a prosperous cabinetmaking firm operating out of Lancaster and London from the 1730s to the 1840s. The firm began using the ‘Gillows Lancaster’ stamp after 1780.
