Size: Mount 43 x 36 cm. Inside mount window 31 x 24 cm Condition: Very good condition, mount new. This beautifully composed and engraved print has the quiet grace which seems to be the hallmark of Molly Dudley Short's work. The prints shows a statue of a seated Buddha in a wood with monkeys and a religious like obelisk. The scene is somewhere in the Far East. The print is signed in pencil M D Short lower right, and the print is numbered number 4 of 25 lower left. From a collection of Norman Dudley Short's drawings formerly belonging to his daughter, Mrs Jane Law (Norman Dudley Short was Mary's brother). Laura Mary Dudley Short, (1895-1986), also known as Mary Dudley Short and later as Molly Freeman, was born the daughter of a chartered accountant in Birmingham. We do not have much biographical information on her but she was active from at least 1929 when she was working at the Ditchling Press alongside some notable wood engravers such as Eric Gill, and her work is strongly in the Arts and Crafts tradition, influenced also by religious themes.
