This is a delightful watercolour by a fine artist of the early 19th century. It is in a very nice frame by the Fry Gallery, London, from whom it was last purchased, and its provenance is known to be by descent from the artist's family. The frame also bears the label of Thomas Agnew and Sons Ltd. The painting is watercolour on a cream/buff coloured paper, the sky and pale highlights being gouache. Mary Smirke (1779-1853) was the daughter of the painter Robert Smirke - her portrait of him hangs in the Royal Academy in London. Her father taught her painting and she was employed as a painter and copyist by Nathaniel Dance-Holland and Thomas Lawrence. In due course she acquired a reputation of her own and she exhibited and the Royal Academy six times between 1809 and 1814. She was also a translator, illustrator and poet.
Frame 32 x 41 cm, painting inside mount 16 x 23.5 cm.
