Description
Of sewing interest! An unusual piece of Mauchline Ware, designed to hold 6 spools of silk thread of different thicknesses. There are 6 ports around the sides of the box, 2 of each to take sizes 40, 50 and 60. Clark & Co of Paisley label to inside of lid advertising its "best silk cord" and its Gold Medal awarded in Paris 1867. Mauchline ware is so called because these pieces were made in Mauchline, Ayrshire in the mid to late 19th century. They are always made of sycamore wood and have an applied transfer print in black of some well known attraction. This one has Burns cottage on the lid (which is still a tourist attraction). This piece is in extremely good condition for its age. The hinge is perfect. The lining is clean and in tact. It would have had some sort of pins in the holes to hold the spools. It is a very pleasing shape and is still usable as a trinket box!
