Mauchline Ware Treen Thread Compendium

This is a lovely and unusual example of Mauchline ware being a treen thread compendium. It consists of a circular box with the lid decorated with a lithograph of Sir Walter Scott and this is framed with a gilt and blackened border. Around the side are six portholes and beneath these are numbers for different dimensions of thread (40 x 2, 50 x 2 and 60 x 2). When opened, the lid is enhanced with a large trademark for Clark & Co Paisley and their anchor mark. The base of the box is lined with a deep blue paper and has a central tubular space which is lined and would be for a thimble. Surrounding this are spaces for six straight pegs which would be to hold reels of thread with the ends of the thread then passing through the appropriate sized porthole.
