Mid Century Murano Amethyst Art Glass Ashtray / Sculpture Bowl

A striking mid-century Murano art glass ashtray, of substantial freeform organic shape and produced in a rich amethyst-purple glass. The piece has a wonderfully fluid sculptural form, with a thick, heavily rounded rim drawn into pronounced curves and depressions. The considerable thickness of the glass creates attractive variations in colour, ranging from warm translucent amethyst through to much deeper purple-black tones around the heavier sections of the rim. Typical of post-war Murano decorative glass, this is as much a piece of sculptural art glass as a functional ashtray. Today it would work particularly well as a decorative bowl, vide-poche or statement object on a coffee table, desk or drinks cabinet. The asymmetric organic form and substantial weight give the piece considerable presence despite its relatively compact dimensions.
