Heritage, History & Craftsmanship
This decorative porcelain vase is a wonderful example of late Ming Dynasty ceramic artistry. Its surface is alive with loose, expressive brushwork - the hallmark of Swatow/Zhangzhou ware - where cobalt pigments were applied quickly and confidently, creating soft washes, tonal variation, and beautiful feathering beneath the glaze.
The glaze itself has a pale blue tint and gentle translucency, allowing the porcelain body to glow subtly beneath. Fired in high‑temperature but relatively simple kilns, these wares often show natural firing marks, variations, and a rustic provincial quality. The unglazed rim and foot, with their slightly rough texture, are typical of the period.
This vase embodies the charm, spontaneity, and authenticity that define Ming provincial ceramics.
Social History
Swatow or Zhangzhou ware was produced primarily during the late Ming Dynasty (1550-1644) in Fujian Province. Much of it was made for export, particularly to Southeast Asia and Japan, where the bold brushwork and lively decoration were highly prized. These ceramics travelled widely along maritime trade routes, becoming part of everyday life in households far beyond China.
