Morris Meredith Williams (1881-1973) was a painter and illustrator. Born in Wales, he lived in Edinburgh for some years before moving to Devon. He is best known for his paintings of military scenes from WW1, during which he served on the Somme. His works hang in regimental museums and the National Army Museum. Whilst in Edinburgh, he taught at Fettes College and was a prolific illustrator of books of myth, folklore and history. He exhibited at Royal Academy and Scottish Royal Academy. This piece is recognisably of Sir Thomas More, apparently being arrested on the orders of Henry VIII. Sir Thomas More was famously executed for refusing to recognise Henry as head of the church. The costume of the time is meticulously observed and the soldiers and their weaponry is particularly convincing. signed in the plate only lower left. On the back of the frame is a photograph of a painting of a man, whom we think is probably the artist.
