Description
A fine oil on canvas titled ‘Last of the stooks’ by Scottish artist Tom Robertson 1850-1947. The painting beautifully depicts in an impressionist manner a landscape at the beginning of Autumn with the last of the wheat stooks standing in a field as the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. The work is signed and dated to the lower right 1888. Tom Robertson was born in Glasgow in 1850. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in Paris under Benjamin Constant. On his return to Glasgow in the late 1880s he began to show in his studio and in the main London and provincial exhibitions, it is likely this work is a Scottish landscape from this time. In 1897 his painting 'Luna Sorgente' was exhibited in Venice and was bought by the King of Italy. Robertson won a gold medal at the Nantes Exhibition in 1910 and the Musee des Beaux Arts bought 'The Morning Star' in 1928. He was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters in 1912 and he exhibited with Fine Art Society in London and as far away as America, Australia and New Zealand. Jeremy Wood Fine Art in Cranleigh held a retrospective exhibition in 1977. His work is included in many public collections. This is a fine example of his earlier work and in good condition, just with some minor craquelure. The painting is in the original frame which is in excellent untouched condition. The work also retains an old gallery label to the reverse which includes the title. The whole is an excellent example of British impressionism and ready to hang.
