Oil Painting of Christchurch by Ernest Ellis Clarke
Fine and decorative oil on canvas view of Christchurch by Ernest Ellis Clarke (1870-1932). The view looks across a lane through the trees to the church in the distance and is titled ‘The shadowed road’. The painting is in good untouched condition and is signed to the lower right: ‘E.E.Clarke’. Clark was born in Derby and after studying art at evening classes he went to work at Royal Crown Derby and rose to be an arts instructor and later Arts Master at Derby College of Art. In his forties he served in the Royal Field Artillery during the first world war. Clarke exhibited many times at the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, he was mainly a watercolourist and this work in oil is quite unusual for him. The painting is frame in a later wooden frame with gilt slip and retains the original gallery label on the reverse. The frame is in good untouched condition with the odd minor blemish.
The whole is a great decorative painting in the English impressionist style and is ready to hang.
