Description
Size: Frame 32 x 39 cm, print inside mount 20 x 28 cm. Condition: Print in good antique condition, laid to card, some old stains and tears, see images. Frame used but good. This is a typically characterful print by the maverick painter and etcher Robert Dighton (1752-1814). The print is an original 18th century copy, on laid paper, with hand colour. Dighton made his name producing etchings of satirical caricatures including lawyers, military officers, actors and actresses who were seen about London town, as well as down-at-heel types. He opened a shop in Charing Cross but had to flee to Oxford when it was found that some of his stock was stolen from the British Museum. He did make it back to London in 1810, and opened a studio there in Spring Gardens, working with his sons, and from which this print comes. The print contrasts the obesity of the successful cleric with the thinness of the "Journeyman" cleric, a theme which Dighton has explored in two other 1782 etchings showing "A Master Parson with a Good Living", and "A Journeyman Parson wiht a Bare Existence". The Parson in this print has a lunch voucher marked "Turtle Dinner" while his companion carries the bags.
