Description
Original Early 19th Century Regency Wrought Iron Strapwork Garden Bench
An original early 19th century Regency wrought iron strapwork garden bench, of excellent scale and with a particularly attractive untouched surface. The bench is formed from slender wrought iron strapwork, with a gently curved seat and back, elegant scrolled arms, shaped supports and swept feet. It retains a superb naturally weathered surface, with old cream paint, rust, green oxidisation and a darkened wooden top rail, giving it exactly the kind of undisturbed garden patina that is so difficult to recreate.
This is a very appealing example for anyone looking for an honest, original garden bench rather than a restored, repainted or over-finished one. The bench appears to be totally original and untouched, with a wonderfully aged surface that forms a major part of its character and desirability. The wooden bar running across the face of the top rail appears to be oak, although we cannot be certain, and may well be original to the piece, as may the surviving old finish.
It is also a substantial and quite heavy bench, with a reassuringly solid feel and excellent decorative presence. The combination of Regency strapwork, scrolled arms, swept feet and untouched weathered surface gives it a very strong look, suitable for a garden, terrace, conservatory, orangery, garden room or interior setting.
measurements
Width: 179.5 cm (70 3/4 inches), Depth: 67 cm (26 3/8 inches), Height: 79.5 cm (31 1/4 inches), Seat height: 41.5 cm (16 3/8 inches)
declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the Original Early 19th Century Regency Wrought Iron Strapwork Garden Bench (LA576864) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Early 19th Century
condition
In very good condition for its age and type. The bench appears totally original and untouched, with no obvious damage and no signs of repair noted. The ironwork is sound and sturdy, and the old weathered painted surface, rusting, oxidisation, wear and losses to the finish are all consistent with age and outdoor use, and form an important part of the bench’s character and appeal. The wooden top rail/facing is weathered, darkened and worn, but appears sound. A very attractive and honest early 19th century Regency garden bench with superb untouched patina.
