Pair of Mahogany Hepplewhite Armchairs, 19th Century, with Horsehair Fabric

A very good pair of late 19th Century mahogany open armchairs in the Hepplewhite revival taste, dating to circa 1870–1885. Well made and of good, substantial weight, each chair features an elegant oval back with crisply moulded frames and a pierced splat of interlaced serpentine forms, centred by a carved rosette. The sweeping arms terminate in scrolled ends and flow naturally into square, tapering front legs with slightly splayed rear supports, the whole united by H-stretchers for strength and stability. The seats are traditionally upholstered in a high-quality dark blue horsehair fabric, finished with brass stud edging. The design, timber selection, and quality of workmanship place these chairs firmly within the better class of late 19th-century cabinetmaking, reflecting the continued popularity of Hepplewhite’s neoclassical patterns during the Victorian period.
