Description
Size: Full sheet 36.5 x 49 cm. Platemark 27 x 30.5 cm. Image approx 20.5 cm high. Condition: Very good condition, some slight fox marks caused by paper impurities. This is both an attractive image and a very accomplished engraving. The engraving is very fine and at first sight it appears that two different colour inks were used, but it may be that it was only one dark brown ink, which has created different shades according to the intensity of line - for example round the eyes the lines are very deep and thick, whereas on the grey fur they are shallow. Drypoint engraving involves the use of a needle-like point to scratch the surface of the copper plate. The point can scratch deeply or more shallowly for thicker or finer lines, and the burr created by the scratch can be removed to create fine lines, as on the fox cub's chest, or left to create a "bleed", as on the cub's back fur. The platemark looks like a false intaglio mark but there is no sign of a paper edge within it, so it looks like the whole sheet is a single sheet of thin India paper mounted onto a thick card with a false mark - a fairly common technique at the time this print was made. The print is signed in pencil but it is unfortunate that we have not deciphered the signature. There is little doubt that this print will have been made in a very small edition, owing to the fact that a drypoint plate is quickly worn out. There is a companion print which we also have for sale of a foal.
