Description
A delightful and ornate (near) pair of brass Girandole's. Three curved branches each with a detailed petal drip pan, capital and floral sconce to hold the candles in place. Adorned with two cherubs resting and holding foliage to create a crest above the beveled oval mirror. With a further two standing cherubs to the left and right. Plus, a cherub crest holding the branches in place below the mirror. The origin of girandoles can be traced back to the late 17th century in Europe, particularly in France. They emerged during the Baroque and Rococo periods, which were characterized by ornate and extravagant artistic styles. Girandoles were initially designed as wall-mounted candle holders, consisting of metal or wooden frames with multiple branches for candles. During the 18th century, girandoles became increasingly elaborate and decorative. They were often crafted from gilded bronze or ormolu and embellished with intricate designs, such as floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and mythological figures. Crystal and glass drops, pendants, and prisms were added to enhance the reflective and refractive qualities of the light. Selling as a Pair only. One branch is missing top sconce. Period: 19th Century Material: Brass & Beveled Mirror
