Description
Pair of Ceramic Pottery Arts & Crafts Turquoise-Glazed Relief Plaques, Children with Dog & Goat, c.1909 Attributed to Reginald Robert Tomlinson (1885–1978), After Clodion 📖 Description A rare pair of Arts & Crafts period turquoise-glazed ceramic relief plaques, circa 1909. Cast in high relief with finely modelled surfaces, they are richly finished in mottled teal-blue tones and presented in gilt-lined ebonized frames. The subjects are drawn from Rococo models by Claude Michel (Clodion, 1738–1814), renowned for his playful depictions of cherubs and Bacchic revelry: Children with Dog (Enfants au Chien) 🐕 – Putti tugging and climbing over a strong hound, one child perched proudly on its back. Children with Goat (Enfants à la Chèvre) 🐐 – A spirited group of children pulling and clambering around a goat in animated play. 🎭 Style & Technique High relief modelling with expressive textures. Arts & Crafts glazing in lustrous turquoise, enhancing depth and sculptural detail. A rare synthesis of Rococo exuberance with early 20th-century ceramic artistry. ✒️ Attribution Unsigned, consistent with workshop practice. Attributed to Reginald Robert Tomlinson, likely created during his early career at Minton, Hollins & Co., c.1909, in homage to Clodion. 👤 Reginald Robert Tomlinson (1885–1978) Training: Farnham School of Art; apprentice to Bernard Moore (1906–09). Ceramics: Designer at Minton, Hollins & Co.; later Art Director at Crown Staffordshire. Exhibited at the 1910 Arts & Crafts Exhibition. Painting: From the 1920s, produced portraits and allegories, works now in major British collections. Educational Roles: Principal of Cheltenham School of Arts & Crafts; published key texts on children’s creativity. Honours: Member of the R.B.A.; Master of the Art Workers’ Guild; O.B.E.
