The Victorian Era was one marked by Industry and variety. The continued supply and popularity of Mahogany and machine cutting and carving meant everyone could now enjoy the richly decorated items which had been out of reach in the past to all but the rich. While the humble slotted screw and dowel had been pioneered back in the late 18th Century, during the Victorian Era it gave chair designers real freedom to create more shapes and curves than ever before. From the Early Victorian period the infamous Balloon Back Chair became highly fashionable to be followed by Aesthetic chairs which drew inspiration from Japan and the Orient. All of these designs were light and elegant, but in contrast there also emerged a strong trend for heavy oak chairs inspired by the Gothic architecture of the Early Medieval Period. These chairs add drama and solidity to any space. For lounge chairs the upholstery spring (which was a late Georgian invention) suddenly meant chairs and sofas could be deeply padded and buttoned and the classic Chesterfield emerged from this. When looking for a Victorian chair there is certainly plenty of variety to choose from. In most cases these were well made mass-produced items and later restoration and re-upholstery usually adds to the value rather than detracts from it. These were chairs that were meant for every day use but at the same time were chairs which you would be proud letting your friends see you sitting in.
