This charming pair of oak monk’s chairs offers exceptional versatility and character. Dating to circa 1930, these distinctive pieces can function either as high-backed seating or cleverly convert into occasional tables—a hallmark of the monk’s bench design that has made them beloved for centuries.
Standing 103 cm tall in seat mode, they transform to a practical 73 cm table height when the hinged back is lowered. The circular tops measure 68.5 cm in diameter, while the pieces maintain a compact footprint of 43 cm depth (extending to 68.5 cm when configured as tables) and 68.5 cm width. This modest scale makes them ideal for smaller rooms, hallways, or cozy corners where space-saving furniture is essential.
The oak construction features attractive carved details that showcase the craftsmanship of the period. Each piece bears honest marks of age and character that speak to nearly a century of use, adding warmth and authenticity. Notably, the two seats have developed slightly different patinas over time—one displays a darker grain and timber color, and sits approximately 1 cm lower than its companion. Rather than detracting from the pair, these subtle differences reflect their individual histories and the organic nature of oak as it ages.
Whether used as distinctive seating with their high backs providing medieval-inspired presence, or converted into practical side tables for entertaining, these monk’s seats embody both functional ingenuity and timeless appeal.
The backs feature intricate celtic knotwork and guilloché (the repeating circular patterns) carvings. The "green man" or leaf-style motif at the top adds a nice Gothic touch. These appear to be made of Quarter-Sawn Oak, evidenced by the beautiful "tiger stripe" grain visible on the tabletops. Some of the timber has various old darker ink-style stains and filler but overall these are in good and sturdy condition.
