Description
This is a pair of late 18thC maritime reverse painted engravings on glass. (The technique is described below)
They feature 2 Sailing 'Cutters' - The Greyhound Excise Cutter & The Baileys Cutter.
1) The Greyhound Excise Cutter. Capt Wm Watson 'On a wind chasing'
I released this from its frame to show details of the overpainting to the rear of the glass. See photo showing the opaque background layers of paint.
The full details of the engraving are written along the bottom but are partly obscured when framed:
The Greyhound Excise Cutter
Capt Wm Watson - On a wind chasing
Drawn by T Soutter
Published 1st September 1794 by Laurie & Whittle 53 Fleet
Street London
2) The Baileys Cutter. Capt Sutter. Passing the Eddystone Lighthouse'
A copy of this print is in the National Maritime collection:
Drawn by T Soutter, published 4th April 1795 by Laurie & Whittle 53 Fleet Street London".
In all there were a series of 6 prints made, mostly of Excise Cutters
This print is No. 4 in the series.
Both paintings are in very good condition throughout
Small air bubbles are present.
The frames are early 20th C.
Reverse painted prints on glass - is an ancient art form whereby engravings are applied to the rear of a sheet of glass and the image is then painted over from behind with successive layers of paint, starting with the detail and finishing with the background.
Viewed from the front the images become vibrant, bright and glossy, and of course well preserved behind the glass.
