This delightful pair of French Late 19th Century circa 1880-1890 Straw Work pictures of Chateau De Boissey, found in original frames have show great attention to detail and are quite mesmerising. The Chateau is also known as Chateau de Tilley and located in Boissey Le Chatel, part of the Bourgtheroulde district in the Eure Region of France. It dates to the 16th Century and was commissioned by Guillaume II Le Roux Lord of Bourgtheroulde to assert his grand status as both an Mp and member of the Exchequer.
The technique of Straw Work1 is close to Wood Marquetry. Starting in the 17th century clergymen, sailors and convicts learned it, and it gave birth to a very rich handicraft especially in France. Straw marquetry came back into fashion during the Art Deco period, when the most prestigious decorators returned this art to its former glory.
The straw used is rye straw; it is cultivated and harvested old style in Burgundy. The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a natural silica polish that makes it impermeable and water resistant.
