Description
Pair Scottish Victorian Cast-Iron Horse-Head Gatepost Finials, Attributed to Macfarlane’s Saracen Foundry (c.1890) Subject & Medium 🎨 A rare matched pair of late Victorian cast-iron horse-head gatepost finials, retaining remnants of their original black painted finish. Designed as both functional estate cappings and symbols of nobility, guardianship, and strength, they reflect the 19th-century fascination with equestrian imagery in architecture and design. Composition & Technique ⚒️ Each finial is superbly modelled with alert ears, muscular contours, and a noble expression that captures the vitality of the horse in idealised form. Cast in heavy iron (over 8.5kg each), they show the craftsmanship and design standards linked to Glasgow’s celebrated school of design. The weathered paint, surface wear, and historic patina enhance their authenticity and presence. Attribution 🏛️ Attributed to the Saracen Foundry of Walter Macfarlane & Co., Glasgow—renowned globally for its decorative cast-iron statuary and architectural fittings during the late 19th century. Macfarlane’s designs adorned estates, civic buildings, and gardens across Britain, Europe, and America. Dimensions 📏 Height: 27cm (10.6") Width at base: 18.5cm (7.2") Depth: 27cm (10.6") Weight: 8.5kg (18.7 lbs.) each / 17 kg (37.4 lbs.) combined Provenance 📜 Sourced from a noted Northern Lake District auction. Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
