Description
A rare pair of William III dog nose silver table spoons, with later embossing to the bowls and chased decoration to the stems. They have thick, flat stems and, unusually for this period, a beautifully reeded and beaded rattail to the reverse of the bowls, more commonly found on late 17th century trefid spoons. The hallmarks are well struck for Britannia standard, London 1700, maker Edward Gibson, and carefully reserved amongst the engraved decoration. The original owner initials E*T are engraved to the underside of the ends.
measurements
They measure 21cm (8 1/4") long, 4.5cm (1 3/4") wide and weigh 123g / 3.9ozt.
declaration
The Fancy Fox has clarified that the Pair William III Dog Nose Silver Table Spoons Beaded Rattail Edward Gibson 1700 (LA578578) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1700
condition
They are in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. The rattails are still crisp and the hallmarks and initials are still very good with only minimal handling wear. The added decoration is in good order and attractively done. The bowls have a light gilt wash to the insides.
The 19th century decoration is clearly a bit of a shame on spoons of this period, but they still display some very nice original features, in very good condition, and it is lovely to have the pair still together after 325 years.
