Description
A fine 19th century papier-mâché lacquered ladies writing slope by Jennens and Bettridge who operated in London between 1815 and 1864. The top of the slope is decorated with a painted scene entitled "Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle", which is inlaid with Mother of Pearl overpainted to give the impression of light, dark and depth. On opening, the slope itself is covered in red velvet. The pen box cover, which seems to be original, bears a label for Austin of Dublin who were probably the retailer. The underside of the box is engraved with the words "Makers to the Queen" and the numbers 1483 and 4183, a crown and Jennens and Betteridge. Jennens and Bettridge were highly regarded for producing quality papier-mâché wares and in particular for their use of Mother of Pearl inlays after they merged with Henry Clay who had developed expertise in the technique in 1816. Many of their wares were made for the Royal family by appointment to the crown. Their original premises were in Birmingham but after 1837 also in London and later Paris and New York. We believe this box to be from the 1840s.
