This is a lovely oil painting of a fisherman in a shallow stream, entitled verso 'Playing his Fish'. The water looks wonderfully fresh and full of movement. The trees in the foreground are very textured, giving a 3-dimensional effect to the scene. Phyllis Morgans (1911-2001) RGI nee Murdock, was born in Enfield in 1911. She studied at St Martins School of Art. She lived mainly in Gloucestershire and Suffolk but for some reason became a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and also an honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painters/Stainers. She painted mainly in oils and sold much of her work in Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds. She exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The label verso names her as Phyllis Morgan, but it should be Morgans and is signed so lower right. The original price of 30 guineas indicates a pre 1970s date.
