This amusing painting shows two elderly men, with their two servants and a guide, travelling through a landscape of rock pools. One of them carries a gourd vase, or calabash, from which a cloud arises with a crane in it, while the other carries a large fruit (a melon), and his servant follows with scrolls and a calabash on a pole. We do not know what the narrative scene is about, but the calligraphic writing to left would probably explain. There is a faint red seal mark also top left. We are reliably informed that the painting is by Qian Huian, an influential painter based in Shanghai, who painted in a variety of styles and is best known for his figure painting of beautiful women and of narrative scenes. The painting is in ink with watercolour and applied white. It is mounted on paper with a watered silk border. A charming and beautifully executed painting.
Paint 347 x 247 mm. Border approx 30 mm wide.
