Description
Please see my stock page for the largest selection of writing boxes available n this website. A box that shouts quality as to be expected from any item produced by the firm of Betjemann & Sons. The company enjoyed an excellent reputation for quality items and in terms of writing boxes produced arguably the best range of slope fronted boxes frequently featuring high quality veneers with applied metal decorations sometimes with additional applied decorative features of Wedgewood style porcelain or Pietra Dura. The veneer on this particular example is superb and contrasts extremely well with the dark metal stud fixed decorative pieces….all original, all in excellent condition. All veneer throughout the box is original and complete. The rear lid and slope front close perfectly square on the original hinges. The box opens to reveal an impressive interior. The veneer used is coromandel, a veneer that was frequently used by the company and very much associated with quality items. All veneer is in excellent condition. The velvet is quite possibly original and other than the expected wear along the fold line between the two box sections is in extremely good condition with the fold line on the upper section of the writing platform still fully intact therefore ensuring that the section remains in place when accessing the storage area beneath. The storage area is lined throughout with mahogany….all with the original lacquered surface ….all in spotless condition. To the underside of the board is the usual inlaid brass plaque in this case engraved with ‘Phillipson Kingston-on-Thames’. This could have been a retailer based in Surrey or possibly the original owner of the box. The office section comprises of 6 section with features that are virtually a trade mark of Betjemann on slope fronted boxes namely the ornate pierced brass decoration to the lids. Once again veneered with coromandel with the expected ‘quality’ finishing touch of veneer to the undersides of the lids. Once again all storage areas feature lacquered mahogany. The two pots are not original to the box, are a matching pair with silver plated tops, in excellent condition. The original lock is worthy of a few words. Again a lock mechanism favoured by Betjemanns’ with the famous Bramah style mechanism, As is frequently the case the lock is stamped ‘Betjemanns & Sons London’. The lock is in good working order and comes complete with what is possibly the original key. There is a huge amount of information available on the web in respect to the Bramah lock and the Betjemann company. The company enjoyed and extremely good reputation and was finally closed when the company was passed down through the family and ended up being owned or part owned by Sir John Betjeman who preferred to follow his calling as a poet rather than continue the company. A great pity in terms of antique boxes but the right decision for him as he went on to become one of The best known Poet Laureates and received his knighthood for providing that service. The box of course comes Highly Recommended.
