This box shouts quality and was more than likely made by one of the many box manufacturers based within the vicinity of the Palais Royale region of Paris. The Morocco leather that covers the entire box exterior is in extremely good condition with no wear through to any part, a defect that very frequently mars the appearance of many antique leather covered boxes. Please note the triple ‘frames’ to the top of the lid formed by smoothing the leather, each band edged to both sides to enhance the effect. The overall effect certainly does contribute in setting this box above most of the style and period as does the burgundy colour rather than the more standard brown or black. Robust solid brass side handles. Thick brass protective brass corner pieces firmly fixed with the original screw fixings. Please note the nice finishing touch of the subtle engraving patterns to each piece. The box stands on the original small round feet that are VERY slightly higher than the thickness of the brass corner pieces therefore gives the effect that the box rests on the corner pieces but they serve to add further protection to the leather base and no doubt help to prevent damage to any surfaces that the box may be placed upon. It is hardly surprising that the lid closes perfectly square given the combination of a full box length hinge, very robust lid ‘stops’ and in particular the brass edging to all edges of the lid and base section inner carcass….once again very firmly fixed with the original screws. The lock is typically French with a double locking mechanism…in perfect condition with a working key supplied. I won’t provide a full word description of the interior as the photographs paint a thousand words. Suffice to state that all interior surfaces are lined with either leather or velvet with the exception of the damask silk lining to the two side sections in the lid. ALL lining is original, complete with no tears and just EXTREMELY minor wear to small areas of the edges. The 4 containers along the back of the based section and two small round containers in the tray are certainly original….one of the latter is a ‘travelling inkwell’. All of the other containers and I would suggest the vast majority of the various accessories are later additions. Once again the photographs depict the items well….suffice to state that all items are in good condition and there are no fractures to any of the glass containers throughout and all lids are original. I am certain that with more time and effort additional items could be sought and sometimes substituted. Despite considerable time trying to research the box I have only managed to find one smaller box that featured a very similar handle (to the top) and seemingly identical original containers. Not as many accessories, void of interior brass edging, no brass corners…. the box of lesser quality and with black leather….Was priced at $995…reduced to $746… not very similar but the closest that I could find. Some items ooze quality both visually and to the touch…this box is such an item. RECOMMENDED. Unpacked weight 4.5Kg
