A quick glance at the photographs will confirm that this is a fine quality piece in a condition to please. Made during the very early (or possibly pre) Victorian period. Recessed amboyna panels to the front and top edged with ball and dart moulding that complements the edge moulding to the edges of the lid and base. Rosewood ‘frames’ to the top and front with diagonal grain that contrast beautifully with the amboyna. The ‘frames’ are inlaid with pewter strips and pierced Mother of Pearl roundels . Wild grain rosewood to the sides and back. Inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon. Stands on the original turned wooden bun feet. All veneer, inlays and moulding are in superb condition. No shrinkage splits to the veneer. Lid closes perfectly square. Original brass stop hinges and original lock in A1 condition complete with what is quite possibly the original working key. The interior reflects the exterior in terms of quality and condition. Gilt tooled leather frame with ruched silk centre panel to the lid interior. Upon releasing the swing clasp to the top the panel folds forward to provide access to the ‘love letter’ envelope, both side folds are fully intact and the envelope interior is in splendid condition. The base section comprises of a removable tray with storage space beneath. The tray features 16 storage sections, 8 open, 2 padded silk, 2 small ‘wallets’ 4 lidded sections. 3 of the latter have the original ornate pierced knobs and the larger central lid with retaining hoops still fully intact to retain various accessories. Aside from one very small area of wear to the silk top on one of the padded sections all lining throughout is in exceptional condition. Original side metal handles to assist lifting the tray. Please note the metal beading to the top edges of the tray and all of the dividers….all original and complete. Obviously this box has been admired rather than used for over 170+ years!!! Originally made as a work box this would have originally been owned by quite a well to do lady when such boxes were to some extent regarded as a status symbol. Nowadays the vast majority are put to good use as jewellery boxes and certainly it is the case that it would be extremely difficult to come across a modern made jewellery box of such quality…… even more so at the price!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Unpacked weight 1.9 Kg.
