Rare Amber Glass Oil Cruet c.1930

An original Art Deco oil cruet, produced in England around c1930. It has a pouring spout with a polished tip, an applied handle and a polished pontil. Collectors' Note: This form of cruet was popularly reproduced in the mid-century-modern period, notably in America. However, these later examples have evident seamlines owing to mass production techniques, their mouth lip is much thicker, the handles are less skilfully applied, and there is no evidence of a snapped/polished pontil. By comparison, the example shown is hand-blown and free-worked with late Victorian English techniques. The oil cruet is of Spanish design and cultural origin, where cruets and porrons were commonplace and produced in many forms; the example shown, however, is not made from the more lightweight Spanish glass material, but is instead made from heavyweight lead glassware.
