I like to offer some unusual items from time to time and this item certainly is just that. An extremely fine quality cabinet of drawers with some unusual features. Clearly made for the higher end of the market this piece of Victorian woodenware is as useful today as when first made and lends itself to serve a wide variety of uses, perhaps to store jewellery, a collection of some kind or purely for miscellaneous items. Very distinctive grain and colour to the veneer. Unspoilt patina. Original inlaid cartouche to the top, engraved either ‘SI’ ‘IS’ or possibly just an ‘S’? Original stout brass side handles. No missing or replaced veneer to the exterior. Twin doors well supported by full length brass strip hinges in excellent condition. The cabinet merits a high quality lock and they didn’t come much better than the one fitted. Clearly stamped ‘ J. Bramah 124 Piccaddilly’. ( A considerable amount of information re’ the Brahmah company and the lock mechanism is available on the internet). Sadly the key has long gone but the lock can easily be removed and the Bramah company still offers a service to make replacement keys. Because it was important to have the lock in the centre position the right side door is larger than the left and the right door has a routed vertical line to give the impression of a central panel to even up the appearance. Slight shrinkage over the years means that the doors do not meet perfectly but if a key were to be obtained the lock would still in effect be able to secure ALL contents of ALL of the drawers. The doors open to reveal a very impressive fully fitted interior comprising of 8 removable drawers. All veneer is in excellent condition with just one TINY piece of replaced veneer above the top right drawer (approximately 15mm x 5mm). The fact that ALL of the drawers must be placed in certain positions for all drawers to fit obviously means that this item involved a lot of hand crafting. All drawers are numbered to the base. Each of the 8 drawers are constructed of solid mahogany and are of very sturdy construction. The circular surrounds and central knob are turned from solid wood…all original and save for a small chip on one knob, all are in perfect condition. 6 drawers have hinged dropped down fronts and hinged lids at approximately the hallway depth of each drawer. In effect this allows the choice to access the contents by either, complete removal of the drawer, or to slide out slightly and either drop down the front of lift the lid. The lids are worthy of a few words insofar that they ae constructed of two full sized solid pieces of mahogany. There is slight warping to the lids and the drawers are quite snug but they do all close square in the cabinet and are all fully functional. The bottom two drawers both feature all of the original removable dividers…..all in perfect condition. All drawers feature dovetail joints. All of the interiors are in superb condition. Each drawer is in itself constructed and finished to a much higher standard than the vast majority of single boxes manufactured during the Victorian period. Obviously given the condition of the item it has had very little use. I have researched and have been unable to come across the likes, quite possibly custom made…..try finding another!! Extremely versatile storage. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Unpacked weight 8.2Kg
