Description
A stunning Worcester porcelain leaf dish in the largest size they produced, examples of which are exceedingly rare, with gently undulating, shaped rim and moulded vein detail throughout. Decorated with an under-glaze hand painted blue scale ground, an enormous endeavour on a piece this large, with a central circular reserve, surrounded by "mirror and vase" shaped reserves and abstract triangular reserves around the edge. Each is finely edged with gilt scrolls, arabesques and graduated dots, and filled with superbly painted sprays of European style flowers, in bright enamels of green, orange, yellow, pink and purple. The central reserve is unusually painted with a large butterfly and small green sprigs. The blue scale ground is scattered with delicate gilt bugs and flies. Blue fretted square mark to the base, c.1770.
