Crafted from polished Sycamore, the front cover features a clear, detailed monochrome transfer print titled "FLOORS CASTLE", depicting the grand seat of the Duke of Roxburghe in the Scottish Borders. The reverse is stamped with the provenance mark: "Grown on the Lands of Abbotsford", indicating that the wood used to construct the case was harvested from the famous estate of Sir Walter Scott. Mauchline items made with "relic wood" from historical Scottish sites were highly sought-after souvenirs during the Victorian era and remain prized by collectors today.
