A very interesting and rare paper Spanish fan-leaf, dated c1813, showing Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow in 1812. The main scene is a lithograph print heightened with watercolour: the foreground and the burning city in the background are added watercolour details. The leaf is in its original "verre eglomisée" mount - a form of mount popular from the late 18th century onwards consisting of black painted onto the back of glass highlighted with gilt patterns also applied to the back. On the back of the leaf is printed "Aventuras de Bonaparte en Rusia en 1812". The fan leaf was one of a pair – the other showed Napoleon surveying the scene on his arrival. Examples of both fan-leaves are in the British Museum (from the Lady Charlotte Schreiber Collection). The fan-leaf was no doubt intended as propaganda, since by 1813 Spain had been at war with Napoleon's armies for a number of years, and their exhausted armies were being aided by the British under Wellington - leading to an eventual withdrawal by the French across the Pyrenees in the winter of 1813-1814.
