Description
A most unusual and superb quality mid-19th century WRITING BOX of a particularly rare design, not seen before! Constructed of the very best coromandel-wood available, with its pale brown figuring, it is bound in brass to the corners and centre. The twin lids open to reveal a well-fitted interior with gilt hinges; a shaped pen rack; navy-tooled leather note keepsake; a gilt-brass mounted cut-glass dish and a mechanical inkwell which opens and closes to keep the ink from spilling. The engraved brass makers label is for Schafer of London, a known retailer of Betjemann products. (11 x 11 x 2.75ins).
*This comes with a signed photograph of Prince Arthur of Connaught dated 1889. (He was third son of Queen Victoria and became Governor of Canada) It is possible that this fine box was owned by him?
