Description
Highly collectable and particularly rare Trinity House saving box in fine condition. The style of the box coupled with the interesting history of the vessel depicted certainly adds to the rarity factor. The boxes are said to have been made by people employed by the lighthouse service and were made in a variety of box styles, the majority tending to be work/sewing boxes. Each item is individually made and featured one or more boats and/or lightships. A variety of woods were used invariably including walnut and satin wood. There is a huge amount of very interesting information on the web re’ Trinity House. Formed over 500 years ago during the reign of King Henry Viii with ever increasing responsibilities re’ the welfare of seafarers in British waters granted by many subsequent Kings and Queens mainly in relating to lighthouses and lightships. The worlds first lightship was launched in 1732 and they continued in service until 1989!! This particular box features a panel to the top depicting a combination steam/sail ship transporting cargo. The vessel is clearly named ‘’Kenley’. Researched reveals that the ship was made by John Bulmer & Co, Sunderland and was launched in May 1877. The triangle on one of the flags and on the chimney denote that the ship was initially owned by John Young, Ehlers 7 Co. London. The ship was involved in a collision with the S.S. Pione on the 5th January 1889 and sunk 4 miles south of Lowestoft. (Supporting notes supplied with the box). Despite extensive research I have yet to come across any Trinity House saving box that features 4 slots to the top….Usually there are just the one. There are a few minor digs and tiny chips on 3 of the top corners but otherwise the box is in very fine condition. The base section features solid mahogany dividers. The lid interior features the original velvet lining with ornate gilt trim in extremely good condition. The lining is a feature very common in a great many Trinity House boxes. Technically Trinity House boxes cannot be described as being of high quality construction. However, what they lack in quality they more than make up for by pure charm and character and individuality. The simple lines of the ships depicted are skilfully done to resemble the ships in an accurate manner. When first made the panel would have been more colourful, the sky and sea more vibrant blue/green…the browns and smoke from the three chimneys darker etc but the faded colouring certainly adds to the charm and character of the items. Given the crisp edges to the four slots I would suggest that the box was admired rather than used. It is always a bonus to come across any box that can be accurately associated with a person or organisation and an even larger bonus when the history is so incredibly interesting and the four slots in particular sets this box apart from most. Search the web to appreciate to appreciate the rarity factor how few Trinity boxes and if you happen to find another with 4 slots depicting any vessel please do let me know as I have yet to see another.
