Description
Regency style inlaid rosewood sewing box in fine condition. As with the majority of antique sewing boxes, given the small storage sections within the tray and the open storage section beneath the box would make for a fine jewellery box. Attractive grain to all aspects rather than just to the top and front as is often the case with antique boxes. Stands on the original turned wooden bun feet. Pleasing tapering profile and raised slanted lid. Contrasting edging that complements the multi strip inlays to the top and the lipping to the interior carcass. The box exterior has done extremely well to have survived in such condition with all of the original veneer, inlays and trim complete and in excellent condition. The lid closes perfectly square. The box interior does show signs of use but it is fair to state that it is in far better condition than most boxes of the style and period with all lids and dividers still present. Drop forward panel to the lid with the original swing clasp and pull tab. ‘Love letter’ envelope to the back with the side folds still fully intact.....quite unusual to find in such condition. The tray features pewter beading to the upper edges throughout and is an indication of quality. All of the material to the lids etc is original, in fine condition with the original hooped ring pulls with Mother of Pearl backs still present on the two lids. The tray would have once had thin metal side handles but they are long gone. They could quite simply be replaced but as the box stands it is all original and best for the future owner to decide. All lining throughout the tray and the storage section beneath the tray is original and although there are signs of use it should be good for many years to come. Hinges and lock original and in fine condition, key shown for decorative purposes only. The various accessories are believed to be later additions. The photographs depict the items better than words though a few are worthy of a few words. There is a needle pad (?) made of Mother of Pearl in the style of a set of bellows and a rather attractive thimble with abalone shell in very good condition. There are also quite a few needles in the needle ‘envelope’ that I am informed are very old as they are all extremely fine with many having extremely tiny holes for the thread at the very end….I am told that is an indication of age? A fine example of a work box of the period, in superior condition than most and with a very high degree of original features.
