Description
Classic early Victorian (possibly a little earlier) rosewood tea caddy in very fine condition. Stands on the original stout turned wooden ‘bun’ feet. Ball and dart edging to the bottom of the base section complemented by the edging the lid and the raised panel on the top. Aside from a small piece of replaced edging to the back bottom of the right side of the base all edging is original, complete and in A1 condition. (The replaced piece is small in length and only noticed upon very close examination please see photographs). All veneer is original, complete and in excellent condition and sports an unspoilt patina with attractive grain. The lid closes perfectly square on the original brass hinges. The lock is certainly original and clearly stamped ‘GR Patent’ with a crown. . (This does not necessarily imply that the box is Georgian). The key is for decorative purposes only though the lock mechanism has been tested and is in fine working condition. The rosewood veneer and velvet panel to the lid interior is all original and complete and in common with all of the interior is in superb condition. The bowl and spoon are later additions. Both of the removable twin canisters are of solid mahogany construction with rosewood veneered tops. Both hinges are in excellent condition and the condition and degree of the original foil lining would certainly suggest that this caddy has had very little use. An excellent example of what is a classic style of caddy that was popular from the Regency through to the early part of the Victorian period. Unpacked weight 3Kg
