Royal Bidjar Persian rug with herati field A handsome Royal Bidjar Persian rug, dating circa 1975, of northwest Iranian origin. The richly coloured terracotta Herati field is centred by an ivory latch-hook medallion, enclosed by spandrels and bordered with ivory bands of angular vines and stylised samovar motifs. Finely hand-knotted in high quality wool with a deep, dense pile and long fringes to each end – a testament to the robust craftsmanship for which Bidjar rugs are renowned. Woven in the Bidjar region of northwest Iran, this piece displays the robust, compact construction for which the area's rugs are famed — often referred to as the “Iron Rugs of Persia” for their exceptional density and durability.
