Buck delin. et Sculp This plate was engraved by the brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, and issued as plate 15 of the Bucks' ‘antiquities’ of Cumberland and Westmorland, published in 1739. The publication was an instalment of a much larger project seeking to record – with the support of the Society of Antiquaries, and especially William Stukeley – the abbeys, castles and other historic sites of England and Wales. The full title of the publication was "Perspective Views of the Remains of the under-named Palaces, Monasteries, Castles, &c. in England and Wales'. Scaleby Castle is in the village of Scaleby, Cumbria. The castle was originally built in the early 14th century, and extended in the 15th century to form a substantial fortification. Parliamentary troops attacked the castle twice during the English Civil War, burning it. It was later restored to form a country house. The Bucks' series was enormously popular: the Cumberland set had 383 subscribers. The Bucks took a number of liberties with the actual view of the castle to produce a harmonious impression. The print was published in black and white - this copy has been had coloured probably in the mid 20th century. This copy however is on chain laid paper which would date the print to the 18th century. Reproductions do exist of these prints but this is an original. The print is in the larger format of those published by the Bucks, and includes the explanatory text bottom right. This print is one of a pair similarly framed - the other, of Tiverton Castle in Devon, is also for sale on Love Antiques.
