Full title and description on print: THE SOUTH-EAST VIEW OF TEVERTON-CASTLE, IN THE COUNTY OF DEVON. : To Sir Thomas Carew Bart., proprietor of these remains, This Prospect is most gratefully Inscrib'd by his very humble Servants Saml: & Nathl: Buck. / Saml. & Nathl. Buck delin. et Sculp This plate was engraved by the brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, and issued as plate 23 of the Bucks' ‘antiquities’ of Devon, published in 1734. The publication was an instalment of a much larger project seeking to record – with the support of the Society of Antiquaries, and especially William Stukeley – the abbeys, castles and other historic sites of England and Wales. The full title of the publication was "Perspective Views of the Remains of the under-named Palaces, Monasteries, Castles, &c. in England and Wales'. Tiverton Castle is the remains of a medieval castle dismantled after the Civil War and thereafter converted in the 17th century into a country house. It occupies a defensive position above the banks of the River Exe at Tiverton in Devon. "Buck's Views" was an enormously popular work in the 18th century - this copy is from that period as is evidenced by the chain laid paper on which it is printed. The print was published in black and white - this copy has been had coloured probably in the mid 20th century. Reproductions do exist of these prints but thiey are usually printed in colour and on machine made cream paper.. The print is in the larger format of those published by the Bucks, and includes the explanatory text bottom right. This print is one of a pair similarly framed - the other, of Scaleby Castle in Cumbria, is for sale also on Love Antiques
