Description
Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909) c.1880 Signed Oil on Board of La Corbière Lighthouse, Jersey with Shipwreck
An original Victorian oil on board by the noted British marine artist Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909), painted circa 1880 and depicting the famous La Corbière Lighthouse on the south-west coast of Jersey.
This beautifully atmospheric marine painting captures the rugged granite coastline under dramatic storm clouds as powerful Atlantic waves break against the rocks. Kilpack's confident brushwork and carefully balanced palette of warm ochres, slate greys, muted greens and cool blue tones create a striking sense of light, movement and depth.
The foreground is enriched with the remains of a shipwreck scattered amongst the rocks and surf, recalling the dangerous reefs for which La Corbière was once infamous. Completed in 1874, the lighthouse transformed one of the Channel Islands' most hazardous stretches of coastline, making this painting both an attractive coastal landscape and an evocative record of Jersey's maritime heritage.
About the Artist:
Sarah Louisa Kilpack was one of Britain's foremost Victorian female marine painters, renowned for her atmospheric depictions of the coastlines of Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands. Her paintings are admired for their dramatic skies, realistic treatment of the sea and accomplished handling of light.
Today, her work is highly regarded by collectors of Victorian marine painting, British coastal art and works by important nineteenth-century women artists.

Condition
The painting is in good overall condition with areas of historic professional retouching to the lower foreground sea, a small area above the rocks and along the extreme edge. These restorations are unobtrusive and do not detract from the overall appearance.
There is age-related craquelure and scattered foxing. The later gilt frame shows expected wear consistent with age and use.
