Description
This is a truly outstanding 18th Century (c.1790) abntique satinwood Hepplewhite desk. Having one long drawer with leather lined writing slope which ratchets up in the centre. When flat the whole slides back to reveal the drawer itself. The drawer runs on metal runners as it is so heavy, it slides effortlessly. Each side has 3 graduated drawers with a central concave cupboard with original “chicken wire”grills. To the top is an elegantly curving back with a bookshelf, which is fixed to the base.
The whole piece is veneered in sawn cut veneers of the finest satinwood, with tulip and kingwood cross banding, ebony and boxwood lines. The six tapered legs are again inlaid with tulip wood to create the illusion of fluting, with square brass feet and steel buttons. Superb quality and an extremely rare design. We have never seen this particular model before except in a design by George Hepplewhite in his book “ Cabinet-Maker and Upholsters Guide “ Although this book was produced after his death by his wife Alice.
All are veneered on oak with oak linings to drawers. No restoration or damage totally original.
It is without doubt an example of the finest cabinet-making of the late 18th Century. Been in my home for over 25 years.
